Mylar centerboard gasket kit, essential for ensuring a watertight seal while sailing.

One roll is enough to replace the two gaskets of a centerboard trunk on most small sailing dinghies.

The kit includes 2m of Mylar strip and a tube of neoprene-type adhesive.

How to replace centerboard gaskets?

Replacing centerboard gaskets is within everyone's reach; you just need to be methodical to ensure good adhesion to the hull.

1. Preparation and cutting the strips

  • Measure and cut: Cut a Mylar strip corresponding to the length of your centerboard trunk, adding a 125 mm margin at each end.

  • Round the corners: Using sharp scissors, round off the 4 corners of your main strip. This will prevent the corners from peeling off due to speed and water.

  • Prepare the end "caps": Cut two small secondary gaskets (also rounded). These will overlap and lock the ends of the main gasket to ensure sealing and durability.

2. Marking and preparing the hull

  • Dry fit: Place the main gasket on the hull and hold it temporarily with masking tape (painter's tape) at each end.

  • Mark the guides: Using a grease pencil, carefully trace the outline of the area to be glued on the hull.

  • Prepare the surface: Remove the Mylar. For the glue to adhere perfectly, lightly sand the hull in the traced area with fine sandpaper, then degrease thoroughly.

3. Gluing and application

  • Double gluing: Apply a thin, even layer of glue to the hull AND to the inner side of the Mylar gasket. Make sure to cover every square millimeter.

  • The finger test: Wait until the glue is dry to the touch (it should no longer be tacky on your fingers).

  • Contact: Carefully apply the gasket to the hull. Using a clean cloth, press firmly from the center outward to remove absolutely all air bubbles.

4. Finishing

  • The opening: Using a sharp utility knife, slit the installed gasket along the entire length of the centerboard trunk. Note: It is not necessary to drill holes at the ends.

  • Cleaning: Immediately remove any excess glue for a clean and hydrodynamic finish.
