Epoxy, PU or neoprene glue: how to choose in 5 points
Gluing deck hardware, repairing a wetsuit, or replacing a centerboard gasket do not require the same type of glue. The three most common families in the nautical world are epoxy, polyurethane (PU), and neoprene contact adhesive. Here are 5 points to check.
1. The materials to be bonded
Epoxy glue bonds rigid materials: metal, wood, polyester, glass, and ceramic. This is the case for the Bison two-component epoxy glue and the Talamex epoxy glue syringe (wood, polyester, leather, hard rubber, metal). Polyurethane glue bonds a wide range of materials, including rubber and many synthetics, such as the Bison multi-purpose polyurethane glue. Neoprene contact adhesive is used for rubber, neoprene, leather, and flexible materials, such as the Bison 50 ml neoprene contact adhesive.
2. The rigidity of the bond
Epoxy forms a rigid bond, suitable for parts that must not move. Neoprene glue remains flexible and follows the deformations of a wetsuit or a Mylar strip. Marine polyurethane adhesive sealants, such as Sikaflex 291i or Sikaflex 552-I, remain elastic and absorb vibrations, making them suitable for installing deck hardware.

3. Application method
Epoxy glues and the Bison PU glue are two-component: you must mix the two parts in the correct ratio. The Talamex syringe automatically doses the mixture. Neoprene contact adhesive is applied in a thin layer to both surfaces; let it dry for a few minutes before joining by pressing firmly. Sikaflex adhesive sealants are applied with a caulking gun and cure with moisture in the air.

4. Setting time and packaging
Check the handling time before starting: the Talamex syringe dries in about 5 minutes at 20°C, which is suitable for small repairs but leaves little time to position a large part. Also, choose the packaging according to the quantity: a 50 to 70 ml tube for a one-off repair, a 300 ml cartridge for multiple bonds.

5. Resistance to water and marine conditions
Not all glues can withstand prolonged immersion, salt, and UV rays. Check the product sheet indications. The Bison PU glue is designed for assemblies exposed to seawater and temperature variations, but it does not bond polyethylene, polypropylene, or silicones. To replace the gaskets of a centerboard trunk, the centerboard gasket + Thixofix glue kit provides the strip and a suitable neoprene-type glue.
