Make the right choice: Choosing your blocks

Rings are an excellent alternative to pulleys when there is a need for a high static load or simply when the cost of a pulley is not justified, for a deflector or a lazy jack line guide, for example.

The primary advantage of the low-friction ring is, of course, its reduced weight compared to a classic pulley, while maintaining an equivalent working load. For example, a 60mm Antal OPF single pulley with a working load of 800kg weighs 160 grams, whereas for the same load, a low-friction ANTAL ring weighs only 5 grams.

However, it should be noted that the greater the rope angle, the more the load capacity decreases. For example, for a rope making a 180-degree turn, the working load decreases by approximately 45%.

Some examples of low-friction ring usage

  • Lazy jack line guides,
  • Control line deflectors,
  • Outhaul adjustments,
  • 3D headsail adjustments (barbers, clew points),
  • Cascading purchase systems (e.g., boom vang),
  • "Dead-eye" type lanyards,
  • Lazy jacks

Rings have infinite utility for replacing many elements of your boat's hardware. They are ideal for maneuvers requiring a high load and low range of motion. It is worth noting that rings are not intended to be used for maneuvers requiring high speed of action.

For that, nothing replaces pulleys.
